The System Mechanic family of products, DriveScrubber, Malware Killer, Search and Recover, System Shield, Privacy Guardian and ByePass use the System Mechanic Ultimate Defense framework, using a single installation file which is the base product of System Mechanic Ultimate Defense.

If you have purchased System Mechanic Professional or System Mechanic Ultimate Defense, Backup and Restore is already included as part of their suite of tools.

Note: Backup and Restore is only available in System Mechanic Professional and System Mechanic Ultimate Defense version 24 and newer, and only on 64-bit Windows. It is not available on 32-bit versions of Windows.

Backup and Restore

  1. Navigate to Backup and Restore from Performance and from the drop down menu on the right select select Toolbox.

  2. Select Backup and Restore.

  3. Select Create My Backup.

  4. Navigate to the files to backup.

  5. To backup an entire folder, click on the plus sign to the right of it and click on the Next Step button.

Otherwise, to backup individual files, double-click on a folder to navigate further into it, select files, clicking on the plus sign to the right of them, and click on the Next Step button to continue.

  6. Click on the Complete Backup button. By default, the backup is saved to the Windows Documents folder.

  7. On completion, you will see the backup file size (post compression) as well as the amount of files the backup contains.

Add Items

Adding additional files to the backup is quite easy. When you open Back and Restore, it automatically opens to the backup that was created.

  1. Click the Add Items button.

  2. Navigate to the additional files to add to the backup and click the Next Step button.

  3. You will notice the increase in backup size. Click the Complete Backup button.

On completion, you will see the backup file size (post compression) as well as the updated amount of files the backup now contains.

Restoring Items

Restoring files from the backup is equally easy. When you open Back and Restore, it automatically opens to the backup that was created.

  1. Click on the Restore button.

There will be two options for restoring files, Restore all Files and Folders and Pick Files and Folders.

    Restore all Files and Folders

As a note, when selecting this option, all files and folders will be restored to their original location(s). In the event that the restore location has changed, such as the folder being deleted or its name changed, the original folders will be re-created.

When clicking Complete Restore, a restore options dialog will appear, allowing you to either overwrite existing files from the backup or to restore the files from backup as copies, preserving the current existing files at the same destination location. The latter will simply append "backup" to the filename. For example, NEWFILE1.PY.backup.

    Pick Files and Folders

You can restore an entire folder that was backed up by selecting the plus sign to the right of folder as shown below.

To restore individual files, double-click a folder and then select the individual files that you want to restore.

Once you have made a selection, click on the Next Step button and the file restore dialog will again appear.

Clicking on the Complete Restore button will again show the restore options dialog.

After making your selection your restoration of files is now complete!

Congratulations on learning how to use the Backup and Restore tool feature of System Mechanic Professional and System Mechanic Ultimate Defense.
